My first ever "piece" of music, it's actually a misplayed G scale, but I liked the sound and feel. I was listening to the ABC in the bush in the late '80s with an article about the closing of the shipyards on the Clyde in the 1970s. That gave it it's name. The lyric didn't come along until many years later, and was just meant to be a sketch, but it ended up fitting just right, so I left it. Oh, and the lyric is an homage to Mark Knopfler's "Telegraph Road"
lyrics
Abandoned Factories
A long time ago-
Came a man on a log-
(He was) Floating down the Coast-
With a wife, two kids and a dog,
When a stormy sky-tide drove them onto an abandoned beach,
A pebbly beach-
Grey, - storm wracked-
Where nobody had been before-
Strong-forested behind; with tall cliffs, beside.
He piled up the parapets, and he; packed in the pavements,
And proceeded to practice the power of his people.
He carved and he wrought, from the forest, behind;
The first wooden vessel ever keeled, on the sand….
And more people came and their children built factories,
And more people came and they practiced efficiency-
And they got so efficient and their vessels grew taller,
And they sailed the Seas, and they built factories’
And the vessels grew stronger and leaner and meaner;
And the factories fought for efficiency privilege-
Fought and won, in far-flung lands.
But they beat each other to the punch.
And on the abandoned beach,
The weeds grow strong;
Between the hard-packed cobble where ships were built.
And the windows in the factories all creak and break,
And let the birds fly through-
Six thousand years of business, Six thousand years of History:
Laid open to the Winds….
Abandoned Factories.
