about

I really wanted to find out why poetry was reputed to move people, so I waded through years of complete crap before I winnowed out a few beauties that I thought had meaning and relevance. William Blake's "Songs of Innocence" was pretty hard going, with all the Victorian religious over-and-undertones; and it wasn't until I'd read Dante's "Inferno" that I got a bit of a laugh out of it. The Tyger, of course, is a manifestation of the creative force (God) that makes all things, good and bad, which means that "God made the Devil", too. And the plaintive cry of "Did he who made the Lamb make thee?" just HAD to be twisted into "...make ME?"! Plus, I like the Smithcraft allegories of forging chains on anvils, and hot fires raging, too.
